Class – Beginner Wheel Spinning!

Students Will:

  • Receive handouts – written directions for independence.
  • Materials to make their skein, based on our natural and hand-dyed roving bags.
  • See demonstration and get one-on-one hands-on instruction and guided practice.
  • Covered topics include:  the parts & purpose of the wheel. beginner vocabulary & history, spinning posture and positions, preferences of hands & feet & eye coordination, setting up the wheel and beginning your spin.
  • Open access to our buffet of different fibers and colors that can be included in your artistic class piece. (With In-person instruction)

Description:

We want you to attain a new skill, enjoy what you’re doing, and successfully create!  We take pride in offering a warm and welcoming atmosphere.  Appropriately sized, accomplishable projects are chosen for student success and mastery of a skill.  (Existing project based instruction is separate.)  This class is based on creating a 2+ ounce skein of yarn for the person that has never spun before.  We have spinning wheels, however, if students have their own wheel they are encouraged to use their own.

Materials Included & Optional Materials:

INCLUDED:  A 4 ounce roving bag that makes one skein.  OPTIONAL:  For Free- plenty of additional fiber provided at in-person events only.  For Fees- additional fiber supplies, fleece, roving and locks.

Skill & age level needed:

This activity is good for a wide age range from children through adults.  Our suggested age  would be 10+ and ability would just be, can the person do a focused activity for 20 minutes or so at a time.  Students will need to be able to retain focus/concentration to do repetitive eye-hand and foot coordinated movements.

Class Location/requirements & Distance Learning:

On Location:  Avalon Springs Farm in Mount Airy, MD USA.  Classes are taught in-person and hands-on.  This class is inside the studio.  Facilities include bathroom.  Nothing is specifically handicap accessible, but we are happy to try to accommodate.  For any special needs, please inquire.  We will try.

Vaccination for COVID 19 is requested.  Mask wearing & social distancing encouraged. 

Distance Learning:  We can now offer many classes and activities via live-video (zoom/facetime) for instruction with materials shipped.  This has been an excellent means to work around the fluctuating local pandemic situation.  This is also available for students with mobility disabilities.

If materials are shipped, we will charge $8.00 in addition to class cost.

This is a 1  hour activity.  It is assumed that students will need additional skill development beyond the scope of the class, we can do follow up instruction on a number of topic areas.  We are happy to answer all your questions and or provide additional class time in any number of scenarios, such as, one to one tutoring or small group instruction.

Traditionally we’ve done small group instruction/tutoring with as few as one person and up to about 10.   If you are interested in a group activity, please inquire.  Group rates may apply.  Home school & 4-H are welcome.

Students under the age of 16 may need an accompanying adult.
