This post is about a revived approach to dyeing yarn and being an artist. All of the yarn in the photo above is connected by color and inspired by the imagery I get when reading and learning about Prince Llewellyn. So, all the colorway names in this collection will be connected to that theme.
They are:
Top Left – Prince Llewellyn; Top Middle – Gelert’s Loyalty; Top Right – Love & Loyalty
Lower Left – Speckle Bread; Lower Middle – Huntsman; Lower Right – Royal Heir
The photo documents four separate dye methods. Each method creates different levels of color intensity and fiber reveal. The three main techniques are depicted with the yarn skeined up for sale and underneath it is what the yarn looks like prior to skeining. The yarns could be used individually or in different combinations. The study was to investigate a tight grouping of colors and dyes. And, to enjoy what they look like in different but harmonious combinations.
The story of Prince Llewellyn and his beloved dog Gelert is Welsh. It is a beautiful and heart breaking story. Without telling too much, it is about the instinctive actions of a parent and the consequential sacrifice. You do have to let go a little of your modern perspective and allow your self to be in the time period and the moment, and then I’m sure you’ll cry too.
My color choices were connected to the story. Some spoke to me as part of that time period and place; so they were earthy and robust. And, some were more about characters and action; those colors speaking of a masculine heart and loyalty.
The yarn is Pendragon Yarn, 100% Superwash Merino wool, 555 yards in a 4-ounce skein, Fingering/sock weight #1 Superfine. They are $26 each. If interested, please use the Contact Us button on any of the site pages. This was a limited edition. (I’m happy to provide additional photos.)
